2010 Team at the finish
“Are you ready? Yes, we’re born ready” was the rallying call for Castles 2010.
However it didn’t really feel like it. The week before the race our crack team was crumbling under illness and injury and we wondered how we’d field enough runners to cover all 20 legs.
We shouldn’t have worried. Clem, with the help of his harem, continued to direct proceedings from his sickbed with his usual calm and precision, and everyone rose magnificently to the occasion; and we even had superb weather.
Leaving at lunchtime on the Friday meant we had time for a tea and cake stop on the way to our weekend base camp. We were then able to settle into the woodland lodges, prepare our supporters kit (cowbells, horns and cheering techniques) and contemplate the task ahead over dinner and a few or, in some cases, many beers.
Special mentions are earned by:-
- Tim (are you awake?) Reynolds for being so flexible and patient; we must have swapped his leg about three times.
- Gary the Comet for being such a sport both on and off the bus.
- Steve (we’re a running club not a chatting club) Hill saved the day by stepping in at the last minute to run the downhill leg from Storey Arms to Cyfarthfa Castle.
- Jeremy and Paul, who went beyond the call to drive Abyd to and from his leg, fortified by Rachel and Stella’s three course slap up dinner. As well as the fantastic effort by Jeremy to conquer that night’s monster mountain of washing up.
- Pete the Bus for driving 420 miles over the weekend, getting everyone to their leg on time and putting up with the constant racket of over excited yelling, bells, and rattles.
- Cath (a castles virgin with nerves of steel) for delivering everyone else to their leg in the nick of time and managing to run one of her own.
The sight, and sound of Rob draped in the Welsh Flag, imitating the lowing of a sick cow will go down in Castles history.
So we did it, against the odds so it seemed: All 20 legs covered, with some amazing memories.
Were we ready? Oh yes, we were born ready!!
