Cross Country 2011

On Saturday 10th December 4 intrepid Penarth & Dinas Runners braved the winter elements and were proud to represent the club and South Wales in the Welsh Inter-Regional Cross-Country Championships and Welsh Masters Championships.  The venue was the Showground at Builth Wells, a fine course with mud, hills, flat mushy grassy sections and plenty of loops and curls to keep one guessing just how far one had to run.

Unusually, the Masters Races were separate from the Senior Races which actually made them harder - so many fast older runners, and no stamina-starved "youngsters" to easily beat! Clem Clement continued his powerful and fast recent form and came in 31st of 85 in the Men's race, with Chris Nellins trailing further back in 57th place but pleased to feel improvement as he continues a comeback from injury.  In the Women's Race, Lisa Cleary proved her strength on the hills and came 24th of 64 runners, whilst Andrea Hurman strutted her stuff to impress her spectating hubby and children and came in 40th. - Good performances all, in races with high quality fields.

Cross Country 2010

Cross country trophies!

1. Sunday 10th October at Newbridge Fields, Bridgend.
2. Sunday 14th November - Bath [but clashes with the Sodbury Slog].
3. December - Blaise, Bristol.
4. February - Brecon.
5. March - Swansea.
Distances for Senior Men is 10k, for Senior Ladies 6k.

No necessity for spikes, but if you have trail shoes you might find them slightly better for x-co than flats.  Club vests will need to be worn.
It's 5 minimum to count to make a team but we can field as many runners as we like, and every place counts since every placing puts other clubs runners further back!

Blaise Castle, Bristol 4th December
This day was one for the purist...freezing mist, icy rain, mud and shivering temperatures.  Course slightly foreshortened due to dangerous ice in part of the woods.
Well done to both our teams.  Strikingly strong runs from Lisa and Clem, with dogged runs and a real learning experience for first time cross-countryers Judy and Gary.  Andrea showed her usual smooth running style to come in soon after Lisa, with Emily under the weather and showing tremendous grit to both run and finish.  Chris and Steve dug deep to keep up, with Steve a real hero for braving arctic British weather when he had been snowed out from going to Las Vegas where he was due to run the Vegas Marathon on the Sunday.  We think he got the better of the deal, but don’t think he is convinced.
Senior Ladies
Lisa Cleary                        26.31secs             61/140
Andrea Hurman                 27.31secs             77/140
Emily Luke                         32.26secs             112/140
Judy Maranga                    35.30secs             123/140

Senior Men
Clem Clement                  45.39secs             110/235
Chris Nellins                     49.53secs             176/235
Gary Brown                      52.26secs             197/235
Steve Hill                          55.04secs             208/235

Our Senior Ladies are now 2nd of 7 in Division 3, with our Senior Men 2nd of 5 in Division 4.  Lots still to run for, so put Saturday 12th February [Brecon] in your shiny new diaries, so we can go further for glory.

10.10.10 Gwent League

Well done to everyone who turned out for club in the Gwent League today.

Newbridge fields were bathed in unseasonably glorious sunshine for the first of the years fixtures. The ground was firm and there was the usual good turn out of runners for the first of the Gwent League Fixtures. Had we  known about the weather as we left the grey skies above Penarth we would have taken the suntan lotion and sunglasses but it did not deter the outstanding Penarth & Dinas Ladies who fielded two separate full teams in their race - a sixpence prize to the person in club who can remember how long ago it was that last happened.

The men ran a tight formation race but then there were only four of us. Whilst I fulfilled the role of Tail End Charlie I for one really enjoyed the event having not run Gwent League for 2 or 3 years.

Having a full team is so much better for the team's positioning at the end of each race, so if you can make it to one or two of the Gwent League fixtures to represent your Club it would make a real difference and be much appreciated.

We will look forward with interest to where the teams are positioned in our respective leagues. The next trip is to Bath in November where it would be great if we could field both a full ladies team (or two) and men's team.

Many thank to Chris Nellins for all of the organising both before the race and on the day.
